Normal Map Problem Ask Gamedev Tv Hello, i’m having a problem with baking the normal map for my model. the map looks blocky and has weird shading. i’ve tried starting over with the retopology process for my low poly orc, following all the steps carefully…. Ok, i have been trying to do some normal mapping, and i'm getting some strange behavior. i'm sure i have some misconceptions that are complicating the issue so i wanted to ask some questions. i am using, or rather trying to use, the technique described on this blog.
Normal Map Problem Ask Gamedev Tv Absolutely agree — this is a solid breakdown. the artifact indeed looks like a uv continuity issue rather than a bake smoothing problem, especially when the normal map values shift sharply across a hard edge. seeing the uv layout over the normal map would clarify it instantly. I was trying to bake a 'perfect' normal map by smoothing my low poly to a high resolution and baking the detailed highpoly into the clean highpoly (the smoothed lowpoly) . That may be the normal map issue for the background but it probably makes no difference if it is black so long as the uv islands are correctly made into normals colours. Difficult, i only can say. your belt hp is made differently (extrusion), so less dense with vertices. then your properties to bake are totally different then the orc body. those are quite minor bits of yellow it will be fine.

I would definitely try what @np5 and @fedpete said, and with a larger map because from what fedpete said, it may be too small to show all details. this said, i guess that showing the high resolution sculpt would help locating the issue too. Continued playing around with the painting to see if i could hide the trouble areas, but that is not going as i would of hoped. It is a way round some unknown glitches to append in the model from a ‘bad’ file to a new file. file, append, navigate to the original blend file and the objects wanted. so i tried the appending thing and it still didn’t work so i made a new material and deleted the old one and it worked. Help us all to help you. please give full screenshots with any questions. with the relevant panels open. also include the lecture time that is relevant to the problem issue. this can be done by blender itself, via the ‘window’ menu bar top left hand side. on that menu drop down is ‘save screenshot’. close ups additionally where they help.
