I'm going out to walk the property on thursday. some of you suggested that i look for a spring. how do i locate one? aren't they underground?. So we are digging out a spring on our 30 acres. we are doing it by hand and do not have the money for heavy equipment. the spring is under a horseshoe.

If the company that makes it is still in business, call the company and ask them. if you know an engineer or machinist they might be able to tell you the size and type of the threads in the nut and you could replace it. if you can find out the right type of spring, someplace like fasteners inc. might have it. you could find the nut there too. With some digging around on a hillside that has some year round wet spots, i finally located the source of a spring. i dug out a bowl about a foot and a half deep and there is a good stream of water spurting out of the side. i'm so excited! (see pictures.) now i need to figure out how to tap. A coil spring snapped at one end, where the end of it had a hook formed in it to a slightly acute angle. to give a sense of what it is, this spring is made from 10mm spring steel wire, the coil is about 3/4 inch outside diameter, and the coiled portion is a bit over 3.5 inch long. not "a really big spring" but not a tiny one either. If you have a good spring, as a general rule, the water will be better for swimming than anything else you'll find. rivers and lakes are usually polluted with all sorts of man made stuff. you won't have to worry about antibiotics, cleaning chemicals and such that aren't removed by sewage plants. turtles aren't a problem.
